I for one would definitely be interested. I've also always been interested in trying to mod an RPG, but I'm a little bit tentative to try, but if no one else we'll do it then I might take a shot at it.

Wall of text incoming.

TL;DR - I'm going to set up an episodic forum RPG with both "post a paragraph* about what your character is doing" style gameplay and "roll these dice to attack the dragon" style gameplay. No experience necessary. Players can drop in or out between episodes. If anyone else wants to GM in the future, you can do that.

* * *

OK here's the one-paragraph background:
There have been many RPG threads on this forum over the years, and they fit two categories: pure role-playing, and mechanics-based RPGs. In pure role-playing, the GM gives you a setting, a character creation guide, and a plot, and says "go tell an interesting story together." Mechanics-based RPGs are more like real-life D&D, featuring a well-defined set of rules, stats and abilities which define how a character interacts with things, and usually a combat system. The main problem with forum RPGs has always been that they die off due to lack of player and/or GM interest before they can finish (I know, because I've been participating and watching them die since I was a wee tot). However, since attending college and becoming president of a real life board game and tabletop RPG club, I've learned a lot from experience and I think this time we can make it work. There are always people interested in doing this sort of thing; all we need is the right execution.

Here's my plan:
From the start, we should go for a mechanics-based game guided strongly by a dedicated GM. Adding RPG mechanics helps it feel a lot more focused and game-y without preventing anyone who wants to from telling the story from their own perspective in a pure-role-playing style as well. A strong GM presence is necessary because games flow much more smoothly with a single person driving the action for the sake of the players, rather than everyone being unsure about who should be doing what or making things happen. Timeframe is also key: games will die off if they go on for too long, so any RPG we play should be divided into manageable episodes or one-shots that don't last more than a few weeks. In-between episodes, players can drop in/out at their leisure and update or create new characters. If necessary, the GM can change as well (that is to say, I plan to get us started, but if anyone else wants to try their hand at running the show later on, I'd be happy to teach them how).

Here's some examples of mechanics-based games:
Super Dungeon Rumble - Basically a pure role-playing game, but with a mechanics-heavy combat system lifted from Superhero Rumble.
First Game
Second Game
Third Game

Satea Murua/Tel Balok RPG - Invented by the enigmatic CLD and modified by the indefatigable Adam H, these games involve some pure-role-playing, but players cannot accomplish significant actions in the game unless their stats are good enough (some randomness is involved as well).
Satea Murua
Tel Balok RPG
Tel Balok II

If you're interested in what pure role-playing looks like, here's some examples:
Spoiler:
Mega-City Heroes: viewtopic.php?f=14&t=30552
MEGA CITY HEROES II: viewtopic.php?f=14&t=35921
Starhopping: viewtopic.php?f=14&t=103535
Reconstruction: viewtopic.php?f=14&t=45905
Most of these also had separate discussion threads associated with them, so that everything in the main game thread could be in-character

*writing descriptive paragraphs is encouraged, but not required.

I'd prefer a hybrid (kind of like a Tel Balok - it's up to us to say what we're doing and how, but there is still some storyline we should follow at the end of the day). But I'll try either.

Excellent news, because I have been working on a new system that draws from and, hopefully, improves upon Tal Balok and Super Dungeon Rumble. Progress is going well, so hopefully the thread will be up within a week. For the first episode/test run I'm just adapting an old one-shot I wrote for IRL friends to the new system, so it should be easy to work with, a good basic introduction to mechanics, and a good way to test the design/work out kinks.

I guess I'll have to do my job then, so I'm signing up as well.

I normally shy away from complex forum games, but I might have to sign up just because Lav is making it, since she can revoke my status as a Discord admin otherwise. :P

Can you start a relevant thread when you have a chance? I'd like to bookmark it for when it gets started so I don't miss anything. And thanks!

I will start a discussion and sign up thread as soon as character creation is ready to go and the intro post is written :P If you'd like an update, I'm currently designing starter spells/equipment and creating racial bonuses, which is tedious, but not difficult. It's the home stretch.

EBWOP: actually let me ask, would y'all prefer to start sooner, with fewer starting options overall, or wait longer but have more customization and unique stuff?

As long as there is an option to get to the more unique stuff eventually (so you're not completely stuck with what you pick in the beginning), I'd be happy to start with just the basics.

I think I'd rather start sooner, so I'm gonna bench some of my plans and just introduce more stuff in between episodes later.

I'd rather start sooner as well, but I'll leave it up to the DM/Mod to decide whether it's going to affect quality of gameplay (which I don't want to sacrifice).

Anyone feel like another game of Hexattack? We haven't had one for a very long time.

If anyone's interested, I can start a game on Tuesday or later (when I'm back from holiday).

I'd definitely be interested in HexAttack. If patzer's not willing to mod now then I can (assuming some players sign up).

I feel like there was more of a sense of community back in 2014-2015, when the last HexAttack game was played, and there were a lot more structured/complex/involved games in general (not getting into the terminology debate here...). Does anyone else who was around then feel the same way or has the community just changed forms?

What is Hexattack?

A virtual board game where players move different types of pieces on a hexagonal grid each turn, with the goal of defeating the opposing players' pieces. Instead of taking turns to move one piece like in chess, players simultaneously move all their pieces on the same turn. I definitely found it to be a lot of fun when playing in the second thread below.

Original thread (created by Lawsome)
More recent incarnation
Most recent thread (unfortunately cancelled mid-game).

I think the level of complexity was a major factor in the latest iteration's failure. If we do decide to start a new game of HexAttack, a simpler rule set would probably be ideal both for the players and mod.

I might need to read the rules a couple more times, but the concept of all moves taking place simultaneously is intriguing. Count me as interested.

The problem with The Game Of Patience is that the interval must go up, and that’s boring.

I think this has been brought up before, but a thought:

I think we *really* need a Serious Forum Games subforum (like the mafia subforum). Or "Moderated Forum Games".

A serious game being one where you need to put a bit of effort into every post. There's no definite dividing line, but it's quite easy to see what the difference is imo.

Here's a list of all such games I found on the first six pages of the forum or so-

Spoiler:

And here's a now-inactive thread in which a list of such games is being kept.

At the moment the serious games are kinda swamped by the more low-effort games- and the only currently-active serious game is Hexattack. I think it'd be easier to gain interest in more serious games if they were in their own subforum and not drowned out by other stuff.

Anyone agree?

I don't see anything wrong with just reviving the old thread you linked with whichever ones are currently active. I don't think there are enough going on at the moment for them to need their own place.

Fair enough. Though I think one of the reasons there aren't many going on at the moment is that there nowadays there are far more fast-paced "silly games" that bump the more serious games off the front page and make people lose interest in them- hence my suggestion. So even if that subforum would only have one currently-active game in at the moment, I think more games would become active again if the threads were separated out.

And looking at a list of links in a thread like that isn't really a substitute for actually having a subforum, imo.

Well, the subforum suggestion is one for the mods, who probably aren't looking at this discussion. You could take it to them.

The Mafia subforum has only one game at a time (I'm given to understand this wasn't always the case), so it would make sense.

I'm not really sure if the reason serious games go inactive is just because of too many silly games. There just isn't that many active people on here anymore willing to put up the effort. A subforum would be quite convenient though.

Yep. I'll probably start a thread in SFI about it, if other people support the idea.
