Shuffle Button AND Random Button

Postby erica » Mon Aug 06, 2012 4:32 pm UTC

Hello! I read a lot of xkcd, so when I use the random button I get lots of comics I've seen before. However, that's not my complaint. I know this is expected behavior from a random button.

I propose a "Shuffle" option, that can keep track of viewed comics and only show new ones (similar to the popular digital music player device with the bitten fruit logo on the back). Perhaps this can be done with cookies?

Anyway, thanks for listening. :D

I think it already does this. I clicked Random a few times, and I now have a cookie containing the comics I saw. (I don't know if it has a limit to the number of comics it keeps track of, though, and it doesn't keep track of comics you didn't get to through the Random button. Also for some reason the cookie expires in the year 21177.)

Hmmm. I will write a script (to click Random repetitively) see if it actually repeats - I did not know it already kept a cookie, though, that's pretty convincing....

From my experimenting, comics repeat about every 230 comics, which is hard to see unless you read xkcd compulsively.... Anyway, results:

Output from ONE (typical) run (Java Selenium Script):

Repeated 702 at 236clicks.
Repeated 916 at 258clicks.
Repeated 427 at 281clicks.
Repeated 664 at 294clicks.
Repeated 682 at 317clicks.
Repeated 609 at 318clicks.
Repeated 92 at 320clicks.
Repeated 1017 at 324clicks.
Repeated 883 at 326clicks.
Repeated 686 at 328clicks.

So if you typically read about 230 comics at once, then you'd benefit from a shuffle button to avoid repeats :P

Can you modify your script to determine how many clicks it takes to reach the center of a tootsie roll pop?

(And how many comics get repeated during that time?)

This is 200 comics, which, since it's a nice round number, would suggest that a limit of 200 has been placed on the number of comics it stores. (I believe that there's a maximum length for cookies, which is most likely the reason for having this limit.)
My point being, the feature already exists, but has limits.
