COPPA is not working

Postby Snowliosis » Sat Jul 07, 2012 2:26 am UTC

I accidentally registered an alt account with COPPA enabled (although I am older than 13), and I got this email:

Welcome to xkcd forums

In compliance with the COPPA, your account is currently inactive.

Please print this message and have your parent or guardian sign and date
it. Then fax it to:

OR mail it to:

------------------------------ CUT HERE ------------------------------
*snip*

No mail or fax is provided, so it is impossible to register a COPPA account.

I'm not saying the lack of non-digital recourse is intentional, but...

Someone with the appropriate permissions will likely be a kind soul and delete the registration so you may re-try.

Az, reread the post :P Someone needs to fix the COPPA registration email. Like davean.

Well, there's a lack of any recourse, and I assume there's no reason to have any option for people under 13 to join the fora if once they do join they can't actually take the next steps, which means this is at least possibly something that should be fixed. And I don't think the OP was asking for their alt account to be registered.

Hey, I'm just going by how it's been handled in the past.

Which is that Hammer swoops in, deletes the messed up accounts so that people can re-register and the snarkier side of the staff mocks them for it. I even refrained from mocking in both threads.

davean's opinion on the matter was stated over here:

When they learn to read. Which the original poster (and many people on this forum) seem to have yet to do.
So, what, 16? 17?
Well, COPPA says 13 ... seems a decent number of people can't manage to read the (very basic) registration form which has the entire first page dedicated to this.

I have a policy of not fixing this for them unless they give a pretty good reason. We have enough careless users already. I'd prefer to get more careful, considerate forumers then careless, haphazard ones that rush and don't consider things.

Yeah except the point of the OP's post was to point out that the COPPA email says to fax the form but gives no fax number, or to mail it but gives no mailing address. Not to ask for his account to be fixed.

This isn't the first time the form to nowhere has been brought up -- I'm rather certain he is/was aware.

I offered up Hammer's unasked for assistance anyhow. I'm sooooo helpful like that.

Ah, I don't remember it ever coming up. Regardless, OP didn't ask for his alt account to be fixed, and didn't even give the username he signed up with, so it looks like the point of this thread was just to point out that the email is incomplete. Up to davean whether or not he wants to change that. Besides that, it looks like this thread is done with.

Yeah, I can't actually fix the email. That has to be davean. Since we don't allow people under 13 anyway, I'm not sure what davean would want the form to say. Nor do I "swoop" in and fix accounts where people have said they are under 13. I'm actually quite hesitant to do any such thing.
