I think a separation would help but a sub category is a little much.

While I don't really disagree with the forum's existance, I REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY hate that you have it as a child-forum to General. As such, it fills up space at the topic of the General threadlist, doesn't get a discrete forum counter, and messes up my reflex clicking on the breadcrumbs. Move it to its own top-level forum, please!?

And as to the above messages about "what's left for general if you break off groups for every possible topic" - this is an essential part of keeping a healthy community. The general forum will always be the center of activity in a young community, but as the community grows, and people start talking about their interests, the forum will quickly fill up with tons of stuff. People start getting frustrated at the difficulty in finding something they care about because it's buried 2 pages back behind teenagers with girl problems, gardeners, people whining about credit cards and traffic tickets, etc. and move on to dedicated forums. By breaking out topics to new subforums, you keep those groups of people internal. Think of it as "making room" in the community.

And you still can't get rid of General, because where the heck else would new lines of discussion be started? Where would absurd little things like the Confessional and Fleeting Thoughts go? The Man Thread? The Woman Thread? Those are the four corners of xkcdland, traversing rapidly through hundreds of lines of discussion, often causing new threads to break out, and eventually, quite possibly new forums altogether.

As I said to Gharbad:

If there's no forum, people bitch that it needs its own forum because there are so many topics. They tell me to make a forum.

If it gets its own forum, people bitch about the existence of the forum, or about there being too many forums. They tell me to get rid of the forum.

If it goes on the top level, people bitch about having to scroll too much on the main page. They tell me to nest it somewhere to solve their problem.

If it goes in a sublevel, people bitch about having to scroll more in the parent forum. They tell me to move it to the top level to solve their problem.

There is something liberating about being considered wrong by roughly an equal number of people no matter what I do: It means I can do whatever the fuck I want and the end result is the same: some people are satisfied, some people are pissed off, and most don't care.

Cheers.

Since you can't minimize the complaints, go for maximizing them.

I suggest making all other forums sub forums of "Love, sex and relationships". Make sure to have the order of them based on the Fibonacci sequence.

Continually resorting to most closely match it?

While we're on the subject of this new sub-forum, I was wondering if anyone had any idea how the "unread message" button works when moving threads. In some of the moved threads the first unread message was really the first one I didn't read, in some of them it was the first message in the thread and in some it was at a seemingly random spot in the middle.

You could nest them according to the sequence - Sexytalk (1) with another forum (1) nested below that, with 2 nested below that, each of those with 3 below them ...

Others have noted that issue as well. I don't have any suggestions or answers to "why" though. Sorry 'bout that!

On a totally irrelevant note, where did MF come from? Do you change this regularly, and I've just missed it?

Returning to the topic, I am very happy with the change. General is a lot nicer now.
