Forum is very very very slow

Postby roband » Thu Apr 18, 2013 11:47 am UTC

Like, taking minutes to load each page.

That's on Firefox, win7, no problems with any other websites. Cleared cache etc.

On Chrome, it doesn't even load.

I'm having similar problems on firefox, open suse 12.1.

Also on my phone, where it won't even load.

It is also intermittent, the last time that it happened was a few days ago, then it was fine for a while, was happening about two hours before this port, was fine for a while in between, then got bad again.

Strangly, pinging forums.xkcd.com works fine, even whilie it is being really slow.

If you want tests run then let me know what tests and I will run them.

The forum seems incredibly slow - as in previous incidents reported here it's taking minutes to load pages or timing out. It's happening the same on three more-or-less independent setups: (1) Windows7+Chrome 30.0.1599.101 m + Internet connection at work (2) Windows XP+Firefox+home ADSL (3) Android + built-in browser + 3G / Wifi. Other sites are fine, as is the main xkcd.com site. I'm in the UK. Has anyone else noticed? It's been like this for about 24 hours now, maybe longer.

I've been having issues since yesterday as well. In the USA, using Opera on a win xp machine. Took me about 15 minutes just to get the reply dialouge box to pop up here..

Just chiming in from NZ as well; I think the devs probably know about it already though, if it's affecting everyone.

It only seems to happen at some times of the day, though. Maybe someone keeps switching off the server when the go to bed or something. XD

Finally got past the log on after timing out every time I tried today. I will use this power to complain that yes, the site is also broken in Kansas. In other news, it's also November in Kansas, too.

Is there a dev/admin who'd like to speak up and acknowledge the problem, say the cause is known and the solution is underway and the site will be back to normal tomorrow? :D (I like such devs, especially if the problem is solved within the expected time)

Oh and if Time's the cause, just delete all the redundancy in that thread.

After a lot of severe slowness, like others, I've now been getting the following.

503 Service Unavailable
No server is available to handle this request.

And now the site's back, and seems to not be slow, so far.

Been getting multiple 503s for several days now, accompanied by severe slowness. Right now, it seems to be doing better, but the same could be said of this morning, right before I started getting 503s again.

I have some experience with phpBB systems. If not a server connectivity issue (given the rest of the site seems to be fine - I don't know the particulars of the setup here), it may be due to phpBB. If this were the case, there's a couple things you could consider doing:
  • Purge the phpBB cache. Obviously this would result in temporary slowness, but if parts of the cache have become corrupted or bloated, it could be contributing to load times
  • Check if any of the installed mods might be malfunctioning or running too much. I believe this forum has some kind of regexp mod, which could be a likely candidate if any entries have been added or changed recently.

Then again, it could be some other aspect of the server unrelated to phpBB. These things can be difficult to pinpoint.

Trying to load nonexistent pages (nosuchpage) is also slow, and I'd expect that phpBB wouldn't need to run in that case. But blag.xkcd.com works, which from my understanding is on the same server.

You are getting stuck in the queue waiting for the worker pool handling forums.xkcd.com to figure out *if* it is missing. That pool is currently overloaded by spam bots*, though I've sort of dropped a large chunk of China's IP space already*. This does its job of isolating problems wonderfully as you noticed.

In theory, if nothing changes, the forums should now be about how they normally are. Unless you're from Asia, in which case maybe teach people about securing their systems?

* mostly

* Yes, there are better solutions to this problem, but given the variety, that is complicated.

It's working fine from Korea, too.

I wouldn't be posting this if it weren't for the 'might have problems if in Asia' line. I assume that's only effecting users actually in China, then.

It was working perfectly about 20 minutes ago, but for some reason it has started acting up again.
A couple hours ago (~10am-12am EST), it didn't work at all and returned 503 Errors instead.

Yes, back to slow again for the last half hour or so. Not as bad as yesterday -- a minute or two to load a page, rather than yesterday's five to ten to infinity.

Last week the forum was slow for quite a while, then this week it became fast again, but today it's back to being extremely slow.

So whatever the issue was, it seems to be back.

Davean fixed things for a while by banning a bunch of IPs that were spamming the fora. The issue keeps recurring for short stretches, though -- there have been a few hours over the last couple of days where everything ground to a near-halt again. Like it is now.
