Hmm... you know, on a small enough planet, the lead/gold will weigh more since the feathers, being less dense, will take up more space and thus have a center of mass farther from that of the planet.

Doing work on a system means you are putting energy in.
A system doing work means it's giving you some of its energy.
So if the system in question is a piston, doing work on it would be pushing it down. The system doing work would be the piston pushing out.

I was about 10, and didn't want to have to walk across my cluttered room in the dark to get into bed, so I fashioned a pulley system out of a jump rope and some old shoes weighted with rocks to turn the light off from in bed. When I'm at home, I still use that system to this very day.
