Re: Just an observation, (Threads about love, sex, etc.)

As far as I know, a thread can either be located in one forum or be a Global Announcement (rules, intro thread). And personally, I would not like to see a sex or relationships forum created. In my opinion, they fit pretty well in general as long as people don't just create new threads for every slig...

Re: Yes/No Questions

The reason that you need to ask about Z is to account for doubles. The first question in my solution was to ask if the first initial was alphabetically equal to or earlier than the second initial. If you don't ask about Z and get only one confirmed letter, then it could either be a double of th...

<grammarnazi> When I were your age. Subjunctive anyone? </grammarnazi> I'm gonna go ahead and disagree. The case is not conditional on anything. There existed a definite point in time when I was younger. There is no supposition. It would be " If I were your age", because I am not and coul...

The typical way that new forums are started is because there are many threads on the topic in General. Travel threads do show up in General sometimes, but not nearly enough to justify a whole new forum. Also, in case you didn't see it, there is a Travel Tips thread in xkcd Meet-ups. http://forums.xk...

Re: Yes/No Questions

I felt like running a few numbers:

To determine someones initials using the method I proposed it would take 25.5 years of asking one question every 3 seconds for 12 hours per day, every day. 87.5% of that time (22.3 years) would be spent on asking about X, Y, and Z.

Since there are two different styles available for the forum (and potentially more in the future), coloring your text is not a great idea for a spoiler. It might look fine for you, but have no effect for many other people.

I expect the answer has something to do with repeating questions 2 n-1 times. If I ask Q1 once, Q2 twice, Q3 four times, etc., then I can break down the totals to assign a yes/no to each of my questions. If I ask four unique questions and get a total of 5 yes and 10 no, then it's: Q1 = Yes (...
