Re: In other news... (humorous news items)

Try it. If the date says 2010, then it's a page that was published in 2010 that has the balloon girl story as a related article. You'll have to wait until this is old news before you can search for old articles. Huh. I thought that restricted pages based on when Google's webcrawler encountered the ...

I am having sort of a Deja Vu moment. I have what seems to be a recollection that this stunt was discussed when the picture was first made. But I can't prove it, I don't know think even Megamind knows enough Google-fu to overcome the current media explosion and prove it. They are saying that it is ...

Re: Trump presidency

I agree that the difference between personal and private property doesn't really matter here. (I think that that distinction is kind of hard to rigorously make, anyway, though I appreciate the intention behind trying to make it). In either case, we want a person living in a house to be able to excl...

Re: Trump presidency

There are basically two tiers of ownership. Country ownership and private property ownership. The latter is pretty much subordinate to the former. If another country invades a given spot, your prior private ownership only matters as much as the invader wants it to. Now, maybe this isn't right, but ...

If national borders are just a scaled up version of private property borders, how do you handle foreigners that own land in the country? The scenario at the small scale allows full access to property sold to an entity from outside that border. If it is different at the national level, the comparison...

Fuck. Researchers need to use reliable data. But I get it, often I look up the easiest to find answer instead of the rigorously correct one. It's going to be a problem until the CDC spends more money on more samples or people use other datasets, or other agencies become as easy to get as the CDC. T...

If an event has a 20% chance of happening, sure, you're in the right to assume, without evidence, that it didn't(perhaps a five sided die rolled in a box, if one wishes to consider that instead of less savory possibilities). You'll be right 80% of the time, so it's the safe bet. But if you roll two...

That's a survivor bias, aka one time rapists will rarely get caught. The repeat rapists just roll the dice so often that they get caught. It seems dubious to me that human brains are just running curve fitting algorithms. We require far less input than that should take and the massive biases in the data our minds decide to store makes it unlikely curve fitting would provide an accurate predictive model.
