Sorry, the professor is a bit of a flake and the numbers I used were the numbers he used. As I've been mostly working with less-than-a-watt electronics and just recently got into "low-voltage" situations (50V and under), I had no idea what I was asking for.

You could try creating a new user account and if the problem goes away in that new account then try fixing from that account. <forehead smack> Should've thought of this one myself. My personal favorite so far is Ubuntu, with Medibuntu installed as a repository for all the "restricted extras". I've tried RedHat/Fedora variants and find the rpm package manager more difficult than deb. Debian is out because they're even more "free" (annoyingly so) than Ubuntu....
