Re: What are you readioactive now(and other book related stuff)?

Just finished Julian May's "Saga of the Exiles" (four books in total). Her stuff always strikes me as uncomfortably elitist. Only those with psychic powers can rule or change the course of events, even though most of humanity in her books aren't psychic (or in the case of her "Rampart...

Re: Recommend a book

Vernor Vinge's "A Fire Upon the Deep" About a week's reading. Tis sci-fi but not too concerned with the tech, more concerned with the story. It has packs of canineiods with a group mind, deadly rolling pot plants, epic space battles with a body count in the trillions, a fricking great endi...

Re: Eugenics & Endangering minors

This post concerns the genetic manipulation school of eugenics primarily but its points can apply to the preventative school. The problem here is that is a slippery slope (you have no idea how much it pains me to write that as a philosopher and trained debater). It is just too easy to decide that a ...

Oh? Fascinating, I didn't know that. Man, I should go patent whatever technology Duke Nukem: Forever was using! Re: Mircosoft and their new and scary controller

Slightly tangent, but US patents [used to] require that a patent be used in a product, or it was invalidated. What the hell happened to that? I'd be surprised if such a law ever existed, but if it did, then I imagine the computer industry happened to it. Patents aren't used to protect intellectual ...

Rhetorical Question: So why don't they have state-sponsored "Slow Traffic Keep Right" campaigns, with catchy jingles, celebrity spokespeople, and no-tolerance enforcement? Why are seat belt laws so "special?" *ignores the Rhetorical Question bit* Cause seat belts are sexy (think...

Re: A game constructed using 4 dimensional voxels/tesseracts

It depends really. If it is a simple as 4d space invaders then, I might be able to play that. However if it was more like a 4d FPS then I think that most of us mere mortal would be screwed ("Quick there's a sniper to your superright*" "where???" *blam*). *or whatever you call it ...

Let's get something straight; I don't care for ANY of your uninformed opinions. I want numbers. Would someone be so kind as to help me look for some so I can make up my mind on this issue? I'd be eternally grateful. Specifically any studies that would imply that it actually saves taxpayers money......

Magneto's power. Why, well it is like telekinesis, but you have to be smarter about it's use to win (never liked super man, whoa you managed to defeat that thug, and all you have is super strength, speed, hearing, invulnerability, flight, laser vision, bad fashion sense, a weakness to green and the ...

Re: Diversifying the Species to Exoplanets.

Depends on the colony. If we are talking about sending tinned apes anywhere then you've instantly got problems. Basically the KE load of a ape can is sufficient to be a world wrecker threat (if the can moves at a decent tau*). However a starwisp or von Neumann solution would leave very little threat...

Re: Resources for getting away from everything? I mean every.

WWOOF sounds good. How permanent a change do you want to make and how radical a one? You might want to look at other things such as monasteries and communes if you want radical and permanent. Really depends on what exactly about your life currently is ailing you. If it is just a baseless depression ...
