Re: British EU referendum in June

This is likely to be four months of both sides declaring all the catastrophes that will occur if the other side wins (see also: the Scottish independence referendum). It's already tedious. I'd like to hope the Remain vote wins, and I think they will, if only because people love endorsing the status ...

Re: Star Wars: Episode 7: Electric Boogaleven

You clearly missed all the prequels. The worst dialogue in this film was 10000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 times better than the best dialogue in the prequels. It really isn't. The prequels are bad, to be sure, but they're not that clunky. I'm repeatedly astonished that...

Re: Star Wars: Episode 7: Electric Boogaleven

Yes, Lucas wrote bad dialogue, frequently. But even at his worst he never wrote anything as thuddingly awful (and I include the Sand Monologue in this statement) as the exchange between Han and Leia where they refer to Ren as their son like fourteen times in the space of three minutes. I was half e...

I'm actually happy about a year off, and never much cared for the having a series split in two like we've had in the past. Might help recharge some batteries.

Re: Star Wars: Episode 7: Electric Boogaleven

- Let's get the main criticism out of the way. That plot line hewed very close to the original Star Wars film (with a sprinkling of the rest of the original trilogy in there). I mean, another Death Star type thing with a weak spot? I can understand the rationale to play it safe this tim...

Re: Star Trek: To Infinity and Beyond

Well, I suspect that people unhappy with the last film will be busy imploding with rage after seeing that trailer. For what it's worth, I wonder if they've played up the action quotient for the trailer. I can't see this film being The Voyage Home Mk II but I can't quite see it being Trek and Furious...

Based on a few seconds in a trailer they showed.

I never understood the antipathy towards voice acting in the FF series, I always thought it has been OK (FFX had some weak spots, but it had some great voices like Auron and Bender/Wakka too).

Re: New Star Trek Series in January 2017

So, no information about era, which universe, whether there will be any link to previously established characters... Maybe they're saving some really cool stuff for a later reveal, but I can't help wondering what will make this more of a Star Trek series than, say, Andromeda was... It's an initial ...

I'm not sure it will be like the movies really, they have the movies for that (they've already pencilled in another one in 2019 as well). However it is on CBS, so it's probably doomed to be terrible like most CBS shows are anyway.

Re: The Martian

The change at the end where Lewis goes to save Watney instead of Beck, was likely just due to the actress wanting more screen time. She's a much bigger name than the guy who played Beck so it kinda makes sense. On that note, why the hell did Beck travel TO the airlock on the outside of the ship...

The Martian

Saw this today. It's pretty good, I think they did a good job of adapting the book and its occasional humour. It mainly works because as usual Matt Damon is a charismatic, engaging presence. I have no idea how accurate the science is etc, I'll leave that for others to pick over.

Also bear in mind in the past we've had the likes of Bachmann and Giuliani leading polls at this early stage and they've fallen away. Maybe Trump can bag the nomination/win the Presidency (stranger things have happened I guess) but at the moment this all still feels like the phony war stage anyway.

It's...OK. Paul Rudd is an appealing lead and there's some flashes of wit (especially in the final act, the only time the film really comes alive), but there's a lot of sappy blah to get through (TWO fathers who just want their daughters to love them *vomits*) and they waste Evangeline Lilly and Jud...
