Re: "I Know You're Listening" Discussion

Then there's the mathematician G. H. Hardy, who before a particularly rough sea crossing sent a postcard announcing that he had found a proof of the Riemann Hypothesis, as an insurance policy--as soon as he returned safely he recanted the claim and explained that he knew God would never let him die...

Re: "Converting to Metric" Discussion

It's nice to know that there are other people in this world who care about safe driving (too bad none of them live in the US :| ). It's gotten to the point where I actually like road construction on the highway because it gives me the excuse to drive at a reasonable speed. I wish I could drive at t...

Uh, not really. By twin bed, you mean one half of a double-bed, right? Those are typically 80 cm or 90 cm. Or did you mean a bed for two persons? The smaller ones of those start at about 140 cm.

The standard US width for a twin bed is 39 inches, or 99.06 cm.

Re: Converting to Metric

If you think about it, most of the Metric system has three basic constraints: the second, water, and the speed of light. The second isn't bound to change any time soon, water at STP will always have the same density, and the speed of light... well yeah. Wikipedia defines the Metre as: "... the...

Re: Converting to Metric

I tend to remember it as: a gram is an almond. A meter is the width of a twin bed. A liter is...well, a liter.

The trick is, whenever you hear an imperial unit, convert it in your head to metric. Then when metric units come along, you'll have a pretty good idea what they mean.

No one else has realized that a peanut M&M isn't that heavy? I don't have one to weigh, but a peanut is about half a gram; there isn't that much chocolate, is there?
