Actually pretty good. They made some interesting and unusual choices. Crowe does what he is supposed to do: I still rate him highly as an actor. Even Kevin Costner does okay: probably the only really good performance I ever saw from him. The visuals are Snyderish (grainy, misty) but it grows on you....

Re: What-If 0048: "Sunset on the British Empire"

About a year ago, I was considering a similar, but not identical, question: can all of the current British territory be contained in a hemisphere. To test this I drew the great circles centred on certain parts of the Empire: Pitcairn, Shetlands, the BIOT, Bermuda and the Falklands. http://dazvoz.com...

Re: What-If 0046: "Bowling Ball"

If an upscaled bowling ball were to suddenly come into existence, then there would be a period of compression as the materials become denser due to pressure. There would be chemical changes under such high pressures, as higher density compounds become more energetically favourable. Both of these wou...

Re: Star Trek into Darkness

I'll admit that having Kirk on the mission didn't make that much sense. My impression was that it was kind of an off-the-books, irregular mission ( involving, as it did, an execution without trial in Klingon space) that someone who went strictly by the books would not be willing to carry out. I...

charliepanayi : glad to hear you contrast it with Avengers. There are a lot of people who regard The Avengers as just another big budget hero movie, whereas to me it was a work of great subtlety and carefully crafted dialogue.

Fe Man 3

I would have to say that this is not as good as the first two movies of the series. In particular, given that this was the first MCU movie since The Avengers, it was a considerable step down, thinkwise. Nonetheless, worth seeing. Positives: Stark is still sharp. There are a smattering of good one li...

Re: What-if 0027: Death Rates

It seems intuitively obvious that death rates below 10 per 1,000 are unsustainable. One way to sustain a low death rate is to have a rapidly growing population: this means the percentage of the population over the age of, say, 60 is low. Of course, in the very long term, a rapidly growing populatio...
