Re: First time builder, all help appreciated!

Some general thoughts: First thing, that motherboard and CPU are incompatible. The CPU is socket LGA 1155, while the motherboard is LGA 2011. Look for something with the Z77 chipset. If you like Asus (and they're a good brand), they have a whole bunch. Find one with the features you want, I guess. I...

Re: Chrome overtakes IE (StatCounter) - Death of IE imminent

IE won't die for the same reason Windows won't die: there's millions of corporate users with no other choice. Might it drop to a small percentage? Maybe, but I'd be genuinely surprised if it gets below 20%.

Re: Android phones with real keyboards

The touchscreen keyboard on my HTC Hero (Android v2.1) occasionally drives me mad - if it thinks you've left your finger on a letter for too long, it replaces it with the special character for that key and ignores any predictions in doing so (you get something like "b!ckwards" which it wo...

Nick Fury was, as far as I'm concerned, modified in the last 10 years or so to be Sam Jackson. Just saw this, thought it was fantastic. The Thor-Iron Man-Cap A fight in the woods was a bit unneccesary, but feh. Hulk was fantastic; I've never been so impressed with his... uncontrolled rage... I thin...

Re: Android phones with real keyboards

I can't help you with specifics, since phones with keyboards are becoming very rare. In the US, the Droid 4 is probably the only notable one that's on current hardware. That said, they can all connect to Bluetooth keyboards, so you might be better off finding a phone that otherwise fits your needs a...

Hulk is exactly as strong as Plot requires. For the record. Pretty much. I remember comic depictions of him as being able to stay underwater for long periods of time due to the strength of his lungs/lung muscles and being able to jump so far that he was practically flying. And besides, the angry gr...

Wikipedia has a handy chart detailing the differences: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LGA_1155

Looks like if you want to overclock, you should avoid H67. Looks like Z68 doesn't have USB3, which might be useful in the future.

Re: New Builder Working on mid-high Tier Desktop

NewEgg's Ivy Bridge prices are a bit high at the moment and there's not really a major performance increase over Sandy Bridge. They do run a bit lower power, though. It might be worth you money to look into an i7-2600k or 2700k since the Hyperthreading will help you a whole lot. Also, it's a hair ch...

Just FYI, the Ivy Bridge parts are out now. Newegg has the i7-3770K for $350 (though they're sold out). You can probably do a little better than that as Micro Center was selling them for $280.

Logically, surely your favorite OS should be the one you're using now (otherwise, why would you switch :P?) This is not good logic, since there's often very good reasons to continue using an OS you don't like. For instance, I was using XP up until Windows 7 came out alongside OS X. I preferred OS X,...

Ease of replacing a CPU cooler can vary. I've seen (and owned!) motherboards with weird mounting solutions that work with stock parts, but might require a bracket for aftermarket ones, and some of the bigger coolers come with brackets that go on the underside of the board for added support, so there...

Man, I decided to look up enrollment numbers. The CISE department currently has 600 undergrads, 410 masters students, 130 PhD students, and 32 tenure track faculty. (Compare this to my department which had 300 students total.) They're a pretty significant chunk of the university. This is really sad.

Re: First-time builder needing a reality check

Aftermarket CPU coolers do have a minor advantage in that you can pick one that cools better the stock one and will therefore keep the fan running a lot slower (and even potentially having a bigger fan), making for a quieter overall machine. But yeah, the stock one should be adequate at stock speeds...

My thoughts: - You might want to wait a month. Intel's Ivy Bridge parts are due out any time now (I think the 25th?), which will both drive down Sandy Bridge part costs and offer better performance for the same price. (And if you're spending $2k on a machine, I would think you'd want the best parts ...

Well, the point is that Amazon's ebooks have Digital Restrictions Management, and therefore it should be fairly easy for, say, a publisher to undercut Amazon by letting other retailers sell DRM-free ebooks, or by selling them themselves. Add the fact that OReilly is DRM free (as opposed to the ebooks on Amazon that will only work on the specific Kindle you purchased the book with...), This isn't true.
