Re: Questions For The World

Finland here. I think 2x4s are quite common but maybe someone with more expertise can correct me. Just wanted to say that around here timber is usually measured in inches like 2x4, 2x6 and 2x2. Boards are referenced in mm also at least if there's a nice even conversion like 6in to 150mm. Bu we do ha...

Has there been a new Batman-film released in your part of the world:

Or is three not enough to start drawing conclusions?

Re: 0978: "Citogenesis"

I've been playing with the same idea with references. Person X writes some arbitrary Stuff to Wikipedia without references. Perxon Y finds the Stuff and uses it in his/hers book/article without references. Person Z reads the book by Y and fixes the Wikipedia page by adding the reference to the book/...

Credit card numbers have checksums so they can be validated.

I actually try to type in my email in both fields if there's two. But I can't recall if I have ever typed either of them wrong.

Re: 0957: "Development"

NHC and APA weren't familiar to me and for me joke was funnier without the alt-text. I just find the idea of hurricane developing consciousness and being confused quite fanny. I'm sure there's a feel-good movie in there somewhere. "Rina, the misunderstood hurricane and the little girl who loved...

Adventures of these consumer heros helps keeping competition going and the price down for the rest of us. Even though it doesn't seem to work. Gas price is always pretty much the same on nearby stations. And for the reference, wolframalpha converted my liters to gallons and euros to dollars and is s...

Re: 0949: "File Transfer"

I've gone with Dropbox for public files, password protected webhosting for limited access files and ssh for my own files on my own box. But yes, this is too hard. Every one of those options demand some sort of computer savvyness. And when on Windows you always need to install SFTP-client. ( Tunnelie...

Re: Help with python? Nub here.

How about using print formatting?

Code: Select all

print 'Hello, %s!' % name

You should check out the basic operators from the documentation.

Re: Questions For The World

Finnish. I was taught to keep the knife in the right hand and fork in the left. Nothing to do with dominant hand. And cut as you go. I usually do this if knife is required or I'm in a bit fancier setting. If it's a everyday meal without guests or anything I might lose the knife and switch fork to th...

Re: Confusing Slang

I would'n call this slang and I don't know if this counts because I'm not native speaker of any of the Englishes (?). Years ago I was visiting my sister in Britain and she was talking about taking a "Sunday walk" on the next Sunday. I was imagining a stroll around the park with tee and bui...

Re: Words which nearly all languages use

'Mother' is definitely the winner in this one. I have yet to come across a single language that does not use the 'm' sound in some way. ... In Finnish it's äiti, which doesn't have the 'm' sound in it. I'm not allowed to post links, but the word apparantly originates from some agent germanic langua...
