Re: 0910: "Permanence"

I've replaced all of the hardware in my server at least once, got rid of Windows, changed the distro, switched MTAs twice, IP addresses twice, and domain name once. But the hostname is still the original hostname.

I assume she's making the sandwich for herself; neither of the others asked for one.

I learned synecdoche as being, normally, "the part for the whole", which would be one piece of bread for the sandwich. And, perhaps, via a homonym, likewise for a potential metaphorical sandwich.

I also noticed that he's failing to note that colorblindness is sex-linked (not to mention that colorblind women are quite rare). And he ought to note what kind of colorblindness he has, since, if he's got protanomoly and she's not colorblind, they could have a tetrachromatic daughter.

I love references to frequencies less than 1 Hz, although (like the Cure), I'm most fond of 1.65 uHz. It doesn't actually make sense to say someone's at 413 nHz. The frequency is constant (assuming they're regular); the thing that changes over time is the phase. "She's getting close to 2 pi.&qu...

I'm just waiting for the day when the statement "past performance is no guarantee of future results", which has always performed well in the past, stops being a reliable predictor of its future behaviour. Eventually, it has to, and then everything will be predictable from there on out. Rig...

All constant strings are true as values. So the assert doesn't stop the program, even if the sentence in the string is a false statement. I think that's the sense in which it doesn't work. Of course, that's similarly true of how that sort of sentence is ordinarily used.

It's worth mentioning, for people who haven't seen the video, that the 1 meter image from it is exactly this configuration of people. They're napping after a picnic lunch in a park in Chicago. Any resemblance to kite or blimp fliers is merely coincidental.

The thing you have to understand about Boston is that it was designed for defense against invasion by land. This is perfectly clear if you study the revolutionary war. The Boston Massacre happened when a group of Redcoats were stuck on a small traffic island on State Street, unable to cross the stre...

In order to trust the Taylor series explanation, you have to establish that those series converge for complex values, which requires establishing that having the real and imaginary parts both converge is sufficient, which is true, but is awkwardly similar to some false statements about the safety of...

My answer

The thing you always have to consider when extending previously-developed concepts to complex numbers is what definition of the existing concept you're using, because you can't just assume that all of the definitions will give the same extension. (In fact, you get all sorts of weird stuff like diffe...
