Re: I don't take compliments well. Here's why.

SecondTalon, thanks for the tip. I'm pretty good at not letting my feelings dictate how I can respond to someone, but little bits of guidance like that are always good to read and try out. King Author, I didn't think that was the case, though I like to consider all possibilities. I wonder if anythin...

Re: I don't take compliments well. Here's why.

Oh, absolutely. And for pretty much the same reasons as well, I feel uncomfortable and obligated towards the person who complimented me (or more likely, uncomfortable because of that obligation). I sometimes wonder if this is some kind of repressed low sef-esteem issue, but I consider myself to have...

Re: What would you do with $10,000?

Do a postgraduate course I've been trying to save up for for a while now. My old University offers a Master of Letters course in Terrorism Studies, which I did a couple of modules of when I was doing my Masters, and it costs about £5000 for the whole thing. I intend to use that as a stepping stone t...

Re: First Chilean Miners Have Made it to the Surface

Stalone. Obviously "Daylight" would prepare him for the role.... On a more serious note: The MSM was comparing this accomplishment to landing on the moon in terms of technological innovation. I'm skeptical. Any thoughts from people more familiar with the situation? I'm somewhat sceptical ...

Re: Today I Learned

Today I learnt it is actually much easier to change my mobile tariff via phone than the internet, much against my expectations. I also learnt than during WWI, British MI5 agents used an early variation of the later Double Cross System in order to extract money from German Military Intelligence. This...

I have been granted an extra day off, with pay, for no apparent reason.

First week here sucked, but this is more than making up for it.

Re: Plans for the weekend!

My plans for the weekend are Saturday - normal school day, so history tutoring in the morning, music classes in the afternoon, and some kind of evening activity I cant rightly remember but might be a kareoke party OR making pizza with the kids. Sunday - day off, so sleeping in, not eating from the c...

Put me down for Martin, his style and subject matter very much appeal to me, though I also rank Steven Erickson and Terry Pratchett pretty highly.

Are you sure you're currently in western Canada? Because that sounds a lot like my last 4 days.

Re: Poll: What do you use to shave?

I'm quite happy with my rotary electric razor, after several years of using cheap and nasty disposable manual razors. Does the job quickly, easy to empty/clean and requires absolutely minimal effort on my part.

Re: Boy Thread: All Roads Got Back

I got carded when I was 26, my wife when she was 28. She thanked the teller. (I think it's odd, especially since the teller was probably 17). I'm probably still going to get carded when I'm 28. I'm 24 now, and I get carded every time I go to my local pub. This wouldn't be so bad if my last job wasn...

If you're using Firefox, I highly recommend the Zotero plugin, which helps you store, manage and cite research sources easily.

I'm glad I'm not the only one here who has been enjoying the series. While the use of the many interesting articles from the Less Wrong site makes the story fascinating reading, I must admit I really love it for it's sense of humour: You're giving me a TIME MACHINE to treat my SLEEPING DISORDER?

Re: Book clubs and your experiences with them

I've done online book clubs, and they can work, especially if you trust or share your friend's tastes. I've been willing to try quite a few books I hadn't previously considered due to those. The only problem with them I've found is getting everyone who expresses interest to keep up, and not rely on ...

Re: Steven Erikson (About Midnight Tides)

Midnight Tides was a rather strange book, yes. It somewhat bothered me, too, but in providing further backstory about the Titse Edur, the fate of Scandabari, the whereabouts of (some of) the Elder Gods and the rise of the Letherii Empire, it fills a gap in the story which becomes important later on ...

Re: Renting Textbooks?

Yes, a second-hand bookstore in my University town did this, as they got quite a few textbooks at the end of every year and, in the finest traditions of academic publishing, most new editions contained very little new information, and rather higher price tags. The store sold or rented them depending...

Re: How'd you come up with your username(s)?

I stole it from a Camus play. I'm sure the old, dead Absurdist wouldn't mind and besides, when Googled, nothing relating back to me come's up. Plus I have a strange fascination with Russian history and literature, so this fits my personal interests quite well.

Re: INTRO THREAD THE THIRD

Hmm, I'm really rather bad at introductions (a fact that has been impressed on me the past couple of months, as I have had to make many of them), but I'll give this a shot, for the sake of politness. I'm not entirely comfortable with giving out my name, mainly due to my occupation, so the dead Russi...
