Re: 1050: "Forgot Algebra"

Agreed. It's kind of snobby, but I guess it's his right, it's his comic. That said, I work at an electronic game studio as a designer. I get the fun job, deciding how the game will -be-, and I'm a theater major. The people who know math? They're programmers. Couldn't do a thing without them, but I'm...

I've never understood how people can combine religions when each religion clearly states that they are the only one. That being said, it would be awesome if the whole world would decide on some Islamic Judeo-Christian faith so we can focus on more important things. Hi; I may be able to shed some li...

Re: 0850: "World According To Americans"

I really have to say that I find this refreshing. I spent a year in Canada and got to hear regularly from classmates who felt it was their duty to belittle my homeland and its people. If I had a Loonie for every time I head 'Oh, you're from the United States? Don't you just love it so much better, h...

Re: singular pronoun for a person?

Yeah, you pretty much just described a situation when you've based the pronoun on a person's gender and not their sex. It appears I have been tripped up by my attempt to 'get with' what I had believed to be the current prevailing interpretation of the word, possibly aided and abetted by a very 'gen...

Am I allowed to name a word simply because I find it picturesque? If so, I would like to see 'yonder' find its way back into general usage. I grew up in the rural South of the United States, where it was used on occasion, and wish I could still hear it.

Yes, that is what I am saying, because it is a rule that generally holds true. We are talking about general rules (i.e. conventions) here. Does it mean that people will never occasionally discern something incorrectly through casual observation? No, but they'll get it right often enough for it to ho...

I would argue that society (and language) create 'boxes' primarily as a matter of convenience to ease social interaction, not from ignorance or a desire to be exclusionary.
