Re: 1050: "Forgot Algebra"

I think a huge part of this is that people don't realize that they can be using basic algebra to figure stuff out. Hell, most are probably doing basic stuff in their heads. For instance I use it a lot when I'm doing cost analysis for buying in bulk or buying just-in-time. I find it's incredibly usef...

Re: Picking a VPS/dedicated server

I think I should push you toward Linode. Anyone you talk to who has tried Linode will tell you that they're simply the best. Here's a few reasons: - Simply the BEST support out there. They're pretty much the standard everyone compares the other providers to. Need X? Submit a ticket. Wait <5min, done...

Re: Computing Knowledge Expansion

Its not the career path thats the problem. The problem is all of the prereq classes you have to take because most people decide "hey I want to be X, but I know nothing about X." and so they have to be taught from scratch. I had to go through and learn how to make text Bold in Microsoft Off...

Re: City Simulation Feasibility

Hello everyone, This is what I'm showing after a few hours of work... http://files.spectralcoding.com/files/projects/trafficsim/trafficsim_100916-1522s.png (click for full version) I've got the basic rendering done and I think it'll work out good. I've spent about the last hour making a bunch of spr...

Computing Knowledge Expansion

Hey everyone, I'm a Junior year CIS Major at my local University. My career path is hopefully going to be something in Data Center Administration or atleast something to do with Enterprise Systems or Security. I consider myself above average in relation to my peers in my classes and have yet to real...

Re: City Simulation Feasibility

I havent made any progress on this yet, I'm still kind of letting it simmer in my mind a bit and explore exactly how far I'd like to go with this. I'm not going to go quite as extreme as fr00t suggested. I was planning on having VERY simple algorithms for the city. Rules such as "work starts at...

Re: City Simulation Feasibility

So I've had one hell of a busy weekend, and I'll be working on more class work tomorrow so I don't know how much I'll be able to get done, but I need to figure out two things which I have no idea how to tackle. I need to figure out how I want to think all of the various "entities" together...

Re: City Simulation Feasibility

I'm not really focused on GROWING the city persay. The way I imagined it was that I would run a task which would generate a layout for a city and finalize it, then have an ongoing task of simulating the actual traffic and such in the city. Generating the city can take however long it wants, though I...

City Simulation Feasibility

First I'll do a quick explanation then go into details, think of this as the TL;DR: How feasible is to generate a city randomly, populate that city with traffic and emulate traffic (including traffic lights, accidents, construction, etc)? Obviously its possible seeing as how there is SimCity, but I'...

Re: Computer operations affecting headphone background noise

I've had the same issue with my HP Pavillion dv9700t. The funny thing is, for years I assumed it had to do with the USB channels and the audio channel running next to eachother inside the laptop itself. Recently I built a new desktop and started using an application called Synergry+ to sharer the mo...

Re: Electronics Education and Experimentation

I'm currently at a bit of a crossroads. As a college student I can't carry a suitcase full of electronic equipment around with me from dorm to dorm just for fun. I believe I have all the appropriate tools and components of my father's in storage. I could definitely carry around a decent size toolbox...

Re: Electronics Education and Experimentation

So I took a look at some of the sites Link and hintss gave me... http://www.kpsec.freeuk.com/index.htm - I found this to be an excellent site. I knew probably 75% of the general information, helped buckle down some circuit theory for me. LTspice IV - I found this to be a surprisingly good piece of s...

Re: Electronics Education and Experimentation

Thanks for the posts both of you. I'd been searching for a good "emulation" software for circuits for quite some time. I was unable to find any except Garry's Mod's Wiremod. Perhaps I was using less than optimal search terms. I'll take a look at those pages and download those applications ...

Electronics Education and Experimentation

I'll get right to the punchline then some background... What are some good resources for looking into, learning, and experimenting with electronic circuits? tl;dr - How do I learn how to build electronic circuits without formal education? The Background: So basically since I was a kid I've always be...
