Re: What programing language is best for complete beginners?

While we're discussing OOP, I have to mention Objective-C. Not necessarily the best beginning language, but far up there as one of the best OOP languages for beginners, especially for creating apps with complex GUIs. Something like 'cout << "hello world" <<endl;' in C++ becomes 'NSLog(@&qu...

Re: Getting the most recent comic

I've got an app up and running now, a few versions in, that uses a Python script http://forums.xkcd.com/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=25707 from The Onion Knight and Berengal to download all of the comics. I modified it to use the JSON files rather than parse HTML, and added the dates that the JSON provi...

Re: Mac vs PC

I have had a Mac since system 9, I got it at age 5. I have been using a Mac as my primary computer for my whole life, and have never noticed the performace issues that others claim exist. I saw it mentioned earlier, but I wanted to let you know. Steam, the company that makes the platform for running...

Re: iPad discussion

Originally, when the iPhone was being developed, Apple went to Adobe and said "Hey, do you wanna port flash to this thing?", to which Adobe replied "No, we think it'll never catch on" Your grudge should not be held against Apple for the lack of flash, but Adobe. Fortunately for t...

Re: What programing language is best for complete beginners?

I may incur some hate here, but if it weren't for applescript, I wouldn't be doing any coding whatsoever

The simple, non-real-programming-languages and scripting languages can be an excellent jumping off point for beginners

Re: What programing language is best for complete beginners?

'Tis a shame that nobody has yet found a hack to use the OPENSTEP and NeXTSTEP libraries on a Windows PC or Linux, It would make multi-platform programming nearly effortless You mean like this ? Anyway, I had the impression that it went both ways.. GTK and such can run on OS/X, too, I believe. And ...

Re: OBJ-C/Cocoa: Programming for OS X

Having programmed in Obj-C and used IB to great result successfully, and having tried to do complex view nesting and layouts in VB, I have found it completely illogical and impossible, seeing as the layout editor doesn't support many of the functions I consider in IB to be extremely basic But I migh...

Re: Is there any real-world use for Objective C?

@thoughtfull: hahaha they call it Wii, haha thats funny /sarcasm @stephentyrone: yea, Obj-C is mostly syntax, but the Cocoa and Cocoa Touch the largest parts, and also, Apple would probably frown upon anything not written in Cocoa Touch for the iPhone Darn, i was planing i using asssssembly for my n...

Re: Is there any real-world use for Objective C?

the ONLY language for iPhone development. (Anything else on the iPhone is translated into Objective-C and compiled as such - no Python/Java/etc implementations allowed.) Not quite. C and Assembly are first-class languages on the iPhone. =) Well, C is more of a given, as it is a subset of Objective ...

Re: What programing language is best for complete beginners?

Being a mac programmer, I may not be the right person to jump in on this, but for a true beginner, Objective-C is one of the best I am also fairly certain that the GCC on any platform supports the compiling of Objective-C (.m) files, although to use anything other than basic functions, a mac and the...

Re: MacBook Pro Fans

There could be OK, I've got a Mid-2009 MacBook Pro (Unibody, dual graphics cards...). One of the fans is making more noise than normal, and it sounds like it is about to go. Normally, this wouldn't be a problem, but this is the THIRD TIME I'll have had the fans replaced on this Mac. Can anyone give ...

Re: Getting the most recent comic

I just recentlty worte some objective-C (For Mac Peoplez) to parse the standard xkcd page and get the image name, image url, altText, and page url Unforunately, it requires the WebKit framework and a small workaround NSString *source = [[[[webView mainFrame] dataSource] representation] documentSourc...
