I love the line "Atlantis begins to reappear".

I immediately thought "Oh! Hi guys. I just had some stuff, you know, to do. Did you see that tidal wave? Phwoah."

Re: I need a Game Recommendation

You seem to be familiar with roguelikes, so I assume you have tried ADOM/Nethack/Angband? I have indeed meddled with the first and last, and Nethack extensively back in the day. I think perhaps IVAN's dismemberment system has ruined other roguelikes a little bit for me, in that I want to be able to...

Zohar, you win the prize for best use of footnotes. So guys, I need a recommendation. I hear this is the thread for it. I've been playing a bit of the IVAN roguelike, Dwarf Fortress and Spelunky during my breaks at work and the idea of short bursts / a pausable game, movable on a flash storage drive...

My first superstructure will be ambitious. A gigantic gargoyle head carved into the side of a mountain. The tongue is the walkway in, the eyes are pools of lava. Creases along the face serve as fortifications.

Re: Will the warcraft franchise get any worse?

Also, class balancing has always been fairly good, and if there's ever an ability that is completely overpowered they usually go to work on fixing it. Paladins used to be AWFUL, and Blizzard did a complete overhaul of them just to appeal to the players who wanted to be one. I don't think I can easi...

Re: Will the warcraft franchise get any worse?

Honestly, there is no such thing as original invention anyway - people require inspiration in order to twist it into something new. My main gripe is with the huge deviation from the brilliant and gripping original to the laughably awful current version. I still see warcraft as an RTS series though,...

Re: Will the warcraft franchise get any worse?

Achievements, for instance, were probably grifted from LotrO. Warhammer Online probably gave us Wintergrasp. The Deathknight was an idea (the hero class) that Blizzard wanted to implement from Star Wars Galaxies since before WoW came out. This is the only thing in your post that I disagree with. Ac...

Re: Will the warcraft franchise get any worse?

I mean, sure, Blizzard will use some things they have learned from WoW. but I don't think it's as simple as saying "It was in WoW, so clearly this is evidence that WoW is taking over everything!" I agree, but look at what I originally said. Diablo 3 looks like it will include a lot of thi...

Re: Will the warcraft franchise get any worse?

The potion belt is being replaced by an action bar for skills. Item classifications are being updated to the quality scheme used by WoW. Items can now be "enchanted" for certain perks and bonuses. But that's interesting, I wonder if you can attribute those to WoW specifically or other MMO...

Re: Will the warcraft franchise get any worse?

Diablo 3 looks like it will include a lot of things they learned in WoW I don't mean to sound confrontational, but can you be specific? Looking over what D3 material has been released, I'm inclined to say it looks like they are improving based on what they learned from D1 and D2, and maybe a bit of...

Re: What do you think of the Serenity RPG?

While I don't have an opinion on the Serenity RPG itself, I'd say don't rail yourself into one universe. Books and systems based around one thing, especially one without an established field of play (ie. Middle Earth is mapped and detailed, but, say, Stargate worlds are not). If this is your first p...

Blizzard ain't the company they used to be, that's for sure. I'm curious as to how you're justifying this. I will certainly grant their stance throughout WoW has changed. But their stance on Starcraft 2 and Diablo 3 don't seem terribly different than those it took during say Starcraft 1 or Diablo 2...

Re: You gotta get into Dwarf Fortress if you haven't already.

You could do that by putting up supports, mining out all the tiles around the ceiling (and above it) and attaching the supports to a pressure plate. It wouldn't be as awesome, but it would have the same effect. Oh, good idea, though I might hook it up to a switch instead, so I can collapse it at my...

I think the thread has digressed from the real topic (WoW is not gritty) and moved on to something entirely different (WoW doesn't have interesting character and events). Really, there's a lot to be said for and against both arguments. In the first two Warcraft games, the soundtrack and sounds were ...

Hi guys. I've recently gotten into Dwarf Fortress, and my first real fortress is doing pretty well. This time, I'm sticking with it through thick, thin, and fracking Troglodytes mauling my fishe...
