Re: Graduate school conventions

Thanks guys, I guess I'll get a little more specific. After I graduate with my undergrad, I'm going to try for the monbukagakusho scholarship and attend Kyoto or Tokyo University. The scholarship only covers a 2 year program, however. I figure I'd come back and either go to work or continue onto my ...

Graduate school conventions

I'm trying to understand how grad school works, I have a good idea, but a couple things are tripping me up. I understand that being a graduate at your alma mater is bad, but how does that relate to the masters to doctorate track? I kniw that sometimes people skip the masters, many people never get t...

Re: Friendships

Friendships do what they do, and no amount of heavy handed working can make them do otherwise. They're also very opportunistic. If you and a close friend go to different colleges, it's possible you'll drift apart, but there'll be people around who will take that close-friends place. Personally, I ha...

Re: what should I major in

Having not taken upper level math yet (still in pre-calc) and not reached upper level college courses, I can't be much help, though I do know, as you've figured out already, the food industry blows. It almost seems like an education isn't needed for what you want to do, just a shitload of hard work....

Re: Ask an English teacher!

While reading through this thread trying to come up with a question, the idea of plagiarism stood out. What constitutes plagiarism when there's only a certain number of ways something can be said (another question, does this sentence have a question mark because it starts with 'what' or a period, be...

So, you've said things about what you're good at, but what is it you enjoy doing? hobbies, free-time, whatever. It really is a critical bit of information that could open up any number of suggestions. One thing I noticed is you said you can do some higher-level math, but can't do calcs in your head....

I didn't know they made 0.3mm Pb for pencils, I'll have to check it out I'm a huge fan of 0.3mm. I picked up a pentel A73 from the bookstore at school when I was having troubles writing Japanese on college-ruled paper. You can write so tiny, the only thing I hate about it is if you push too hard, o...

I made a stupid mistake on my chem quiz yesterday, due to my memorizing a joke instead of the actual definition. Define the first law of thermodynamics. What's the purpose of contempt for idiots? Why dwell on the stupidity of others? Of course, they may temporarily, and immediately, annoy, but if one looks not a minute into the future, does this short period of annoyance really ruin your life to the point of rage? A series of small events that makes...

If you really really want to get into a particular graduate program, you know a lot about the program, and you know what you want to do with it—articulating that in your application is the best way to improve your candidacy. I regularly make stupid mistakes, they're usually only a couple points, no big deal in the future scheme of things. Like my chem quiz I got back today, -1 point for not writing units, the only point I missed on the exam. I've never strived for 4.0, so little mistakes don't bother me, I look at em, g...

I know the things that killed me when going back (and why I had to take intermediate algebra before I went to pre-calc) were fractions, squares, and roots. I thought the same way you did at 15. By age 19, I was making 40,000 a year. I bought a house at age 21. Now I'm 25 years old, I'm only making 50,000 a year in a dead end job. I may venture out and say Arabic. My biggest gripe with google is that no matter how much they try to tell me their ad targetting is anonymous, it isn't. I see it like this. Standardized tests aren't meant to test students as much as they're meant to test the schools programs. So I screwed up my schedule and didn't take Introduction to Chemistry (for students who didn't have chemistry in HS) so if I take it next quarter, I'll be 2 quarters behind, instead of 1 quarter behind, which will make it impossible to catch up without being a year behind. (one quarter behind I can ...
