Hah- I love this one because confession time, I often when watching the sun set will have my inner narrator say "now the sun has set. When it rises, it will do so on a very different world." I think it's some sort of ominous thing from Asimov's Nightfall or some other science fiction work.

This gets posted mere days after I have the sudden realization that Rand Paul was probably named after Ayn Rand. Rand is short for Randal. So I would say not. It doesn't totally rule it out, obviously. It's not, apparently Rand is just short for Randall and that's just what they called him as a kid...

Another option is to apply for MS programs and use that time to increase your GPA before then applying for a PhD. Heck you should probably do this even post a year of work to show you've shaped up.
