Re: Repetitive Coin Flip Probability

Internets to Flumble for a solution that accounts for eitherany definition of "flip". (After all, what if it's a random flip on a weighted coin?)

Re: Repetitive Coin Flip Probability

It looks like I overlooked a definition in my original post. For the purposes of this setting, a flip is not flipping the coin to a random side, but is turning the coin over, so that a heads becomes a tails, and a tails becomes a heads. I will be updating my original post to reflect this. It looks l...

Repetitive Coin Flip Probability

I don't remember what made me start wondering this, but I thought I could post it before I go to bed tonight, and if nobody figures it out before I get a chance, maybe I'll take a stab at it. <Scenario 1> Suppose I have a special quarter on my dining room table that I leave heads up before I go on v...

Re: Socks in a Drawer (OCD Rant)

I remembered I had posted this while I was in the middle of getting dressed (I won't say which article of clothing I was putting on, but I will point out that I have one of my last two (non-differentiated) socks on my right foot, with the other one sitting on the bed next to me), so I decided to che...

Socks in a Drawer (OCD Rant)

You have a drawer that contains 10 red socks and 14 blue socks. How many socks do you need to draw from the drawer in order to ensure that you draw out a matching pair? The answer that you are expected to provide for this question would appear trivially to be 3: the number of colors + 1. But I have...

Intriguing IQ Test Question

Many, many years ago in sixth grade, I was administered an IQ test. It did turn up positive, but I remember a question on it that I have always been curious about. This question was: Q: "Who was Charles Darwin?" Now, up to that point, I had somehow only heard the name Charles Darwin mentio...

Re: Two Children Riddle

Pity that gestation takes so long, or I would point out that DEC25 = OCT31.

Maybe one of them is (severely) premature?

Re: Irrational Function

A good explanation Thanks. Mostly, I was just having trouble constructing a proof one way or another on my own (too long since college, I think :) ), and was taking it out on jaap. I just couldn't find any correlation between his statement about having an intersection point and quadratics with rati...

Re: Camels and Bananas

OK, this is going to take shape as I type it, because I haven't worked out the math yet, and working it out while typing will probably be easiest. What if, instead of forcing the camel to eat the camels out of his load, we leave bananas at every mile mark? (I don't want to call the distance ...

Re: Irrational Function

Sorry about dragging things back to the beginning of the thread, but this post has been bugging me for long enough that I finally decided to register an account: how many points are there on a circle centered at the origin with radius sqrt(2) where both x and y are rational? Infinitely many. Clearly...
