Re: 2073: "Kilogram"

Now I wonder, would the pound remain defined as it currently is? for a wonderful mess of recursive definitions leading to nowhere.

Re: 1960: "Code Golf"

As to Code Golf -- it's sort of fun and a useful exercise when learning a new language, but seeing as Golfers regularly create a new language or new 'builtin' functions to reduce their score, it's kind of a lame competition. Actually that is one of those loopholes that are forbidden by default (cre...

Re: 1897: "Self Driving"

Possibly I'm not being clear. If a route-optimization system is in place that changes based on who's on the bus, the bus is going to never appear at some stops. Not drive right past them - it simply will never be there. So you call up the current route on your fancy app and you discover that becaus...

. But some clever hacker-type guys have figured out how to change a few pixels in the image and get the algo to completely fail -- while not changing the image in a way noticeable to the human Mark-I eyeball. Well, this is just a typical game theoretical arms race. (1) You solve a problem. (2) Some...

Re: 1882: "Color Models"

I hate the concept of color profiles, and I especially hate that we invoke them at every single step of the process between the file's raw RGB data and what actually reaches our eyes. The file itself, the program that displays it, the video driver, the monitor—they all have color profiles that dist...

Re: What is the Biggest Non-Repeating Molecule?

Biggest synthesised would probably end up as some random polymer, potentially with some funky groups randomly placed inside it. The restrictions you have though... I'm not sure even what those are supposed to mean in this context. I suppose giant polymers tend to have repeating parts in orders that ...

Re: Simpler Elo Rating System

Even if two players have the same score, one player winning against another still changes the score of both players. Yes, but it will change very little. Besides, if a new (the ranking on him isn't that accurate yet, because he didn't have many matches yet) player has a skill rank of 1200 and a vet...

seems like a much better safe-word for chemists.

though I don't know about you biologists.

and yes, we need safe-words for polymerization, how else can it tell us that we're hurting it too much.

isn't the velocity of the water sort of irrelevant in answering the question? because in the direction we are interested in, the contributing of that vector is 0 m/s so the answer would simply be how much time it takes for the boat to travel 1.5 km so: 1.5 / 12 = 0.125 hours or 7.5 minutes. sure the...

seems like I've had it worse..
and I wasn't even looking at the time remaining.
the percentages it showed simply moved from 0% to 90% like they should, until they passed the 100% mark and went on to 300% then some time later dropped to -600% before finally finishing at around 900%.
it was horrible.

second one, stil really nice, may have gone slightly too far though
third one, I really shouldn't have done that. that was a mistake.
oh and the second and third one are good friends..

Re: Childhood (not so) crackpot theories

I once thought of a theory where gravity didn't work like an ordinary force, but simply because the universe tended to prefer energy density to be as high as possible (this was after I convinced myself that all mass is basically just a large amount of energy). I never really tried to imagine what th...
