Re: Event Horizon Telescope image

Due to General Relatively stuff, the radius of a black hole’s event horizon increases in linear proportion to its mass as opposed to the cube root of its mass (as applies to ordinary “solid” matter that is not under compression). That means that, for example, a black hole that is a thousand times mo...

Re: How do Maxwell's equations predict the speed of light?

Electromagnetic fields (and therefore, also waves) propagate at finite speed because the permeability and permittivity of vacuum (i.e. empty space’s resistance to the fields) are themselves finite. This is a good thing, because if empty space had zero resistance to electromagnetic fields, then space...

Also, we don't know that black holes really have a classical mathematical singularity. We need a theory of quantum gravity to properly model the core of a black hole, and most physicists expect that quantum effects will somehow fuzz out singularities. But even if that's the case, the core of a blac...

Sure, but my point was that execution by shooting is so common and accepted that the prohibition on “cruel and unusual” execution methods ordinarily refers to methods that are more cruel than shooting them in a vital spot—methods such as live dismemberment or disemboweling, for example.

The usual standard for whether an execution method is “cruel and unusual” is whether it is worse than execution by firearm/firing squad. If it’s worse than bring shot with bullets, then one can srgue that it is deliberately cruel.

The other drawback that I can see is the that, unless your balloon is quite large, the weight penalty of the equipment needed to produce and maintain this electrostatic charge is going to exceed the extra lift in comparison to using hydrogen.

It’s not the time dilation where you lose the energy again—it’s plain old e = m * c^2. Your satellite climbing out of the gravity well is heavier by an amount equal to the energy gained by the photon.
