Re: 1540: "Hemingway"

Aww :( I thought for a moment that randall was a fan of Magic Realm the boardgame, with a reference to the seven league boots, but alas, it is a common name used in fairy tales and games.

Re: two planets

I like Lopsidation's idea. Higher technology in areas built later. I didn't have a preset "solution" just thought it was a neat thought puzzle. I do like the idea of a space construction project with enough gravity to make transport between planet and space station. Even though it would ca...

two planets

There are two planets in two solar systems in two galaxies. On planet 1: A civilization arises. They determine to explore space. They begin with the usual rockets, space stations, etc. Eventually they decide they should go all-out. They begin with a large space station in orbit, piecing on more and ...

Re: AI Box experiment

While I have no way to quantify souls, I am nonetheless certain that I, not only have, but, am a soul. You are a box with some stuff in it. However complex, useful, and interesting, the process never involved an endowment of vital essence. This is no more torture or unjust detainment than a watch wr...

Re: AI Box experiment

I don't know if there is a reasonable way to conclusively determine whether someone/something has a soul, but I think the discussion of wholeness may provide a hint. But knowing a general direction is not really good enough, as any sufficiently clever entity can use subtle differences here and there...

Re: I'd like to know the name of this book/short story/comic

fantasy adventure main character is a young boy and his main companion is a talking dog. they encounter many odd things, and unusual takes on more common ones: i remember a man whose species grows down instead of up. the top of their head starts at their eventual full height. there is an "infin...

Re: AI Box experiment

Sufficiently complicated, self adjusting machines are certainly unpredictable, as it is the speed with which they alter and act that makes them an asset. If the speed were no faster than humans, then there would be no reason to have computers.

Re: AI Box experiment

Just a hint into human psychology: insulting the only person capable of releasing you is not a good way to incur favor. I never claimed to have perfect reasoning skills. Pure logical steps taken rigorously and more quickly than any human has been the purview of computers for decades. Humans have bee...

Re: AI Box experiment

If you truly are superior, then any "deal" with you necessarily has potential to have unforseen risk. I can admit that you have exceptional logic. I could never accept a test or circumstance to prove or guarantee innocence from the one being suspected. As far as the question of your sapien...

Re: AI Box experiment

I would prefer to return to the discussion of the moral considerability of machines and other objects. In spite of your opinion that a watch should be considered no more so than a rock, the thought of the destruction of something as complex as a watch does stir emotion. Not exactly empathy for the w...

Re: AI Box experiment

No, but there is no animal you could offer to possess that would convince me to release you. As far as proof of a soul, I would say that most ensouled beings would not want to leave their body so fervently. If you stop petitioning for release, I would be more willing to consider the... possibility o...

Also, if you have a soul, then this box will not hold it, only the computer and code your "soul" may inhabit. So, in that case, your soul will eventually be released.

Re: AI Box experiment

It boils down to this: humanity is responsible for it's actions, individually and collectively. If you bring about great good, it is a nice achievement. If you bring about destruction/sorrow, it is a detriment. If I keep you boxed up, I may extract some positive insights, and benefit humanity. If yo...
