Anthology of apocalyptic short sci-fi stories?

I've been looking for this book for at least six years, maybe someone here can help? I read it in the mid-to-late 1990s, in Romania. It was an anthology of short sci-fi stories written by authors all around the world - I remember some names were English, French, Russian, maybe some Czech. The cover ...

Re: 1037(?): Umwelt

I'm in Montreal, with an ISP based in Toronto. I run Windows 7 Home Edition. I got the following crop of comics: - Firefox: Earthquake in Toronto, and six months later snow storm with only six kilometers left to go. - Chrome: Aurora warning from CBC (hehe) that may be visible from "here", ...

Re: Short haired cute geek girls wanted!

Hurray for library of prettiness and geekery!
This picture was taken at the beginning of last summer. Two years ago, I went from mid-back length to chin-length. Never regretted it.

Re: "Period" Discussion

This. Is. Gold. Not only did I get ¡burned by cheese!, I now have something that will brighten all my future periods. Truly an achievement to be proud of!
Also, filed for future use in appropriate circles. Just like the rest of the webcomic, really.

Re: What's your major?

Majoring in Microbiology & Immunology, and my Atmospheric and Oceanic Science minor starts next semester (in year 2). I figured out a double approach to eventually be an astrobiologist, my absolute life calling - I'm studying both microscopical life and large-scale planetary phenomena. :D Yes, w...

Re: How'd you come up with your username(s)?

I cycled through my share of silly pre-teen nicknames, then settled for two entirely made-up ones that I like and am absolutely certain will be free. One is crinury, which refers to my deceased grandfather's favorite color - in Romanian, he called it "crinuriu", a sort of dark purple. I st...

Re: How do you sit?

So many odd sitting positions so far, it's absolutely awesome. :) I'm another fan of the nerd-perch, no matter how bad it may be for knee ligaments, tailbone, and neck (especially since I slouch and rest my chin on a knee). It's warm and comfy, especially in winter, and I love to tuck my legs in my ...

Re: "Students" Discussion

I remember having had The Academic Dream (awesome name, Workaphobia) in elementary school, when I was a lot more motivated to perform well academically than I am now in university. It's been lurking in the depths of my minds ever since - in fact, it visited again the night before the comic was poste...

Wow this is funny, I actually have a bathroom set up like that. I here is a pic a took after seeing the comic. For a second, the creep-out factor went through the roof as I looked at almost a carbon copy of our own bathroom. The walls are exactly the same color, and even the counter and sink are id...

Re: "Dark Flow" Discussion

Aw. This is the kind of comic that made me fall in love with xkcd in the first place, combining cutting-edge (tee hee, pun) science with naive human feelings. Kind of related to the comic, I vaguely remember my dream last night involving something like the entire known universe approaching this unkn...

Re: INTRO THREAD THE THIRD

*waves* Hello, xkcd world. My name is Diana, I'm soon-to-be 20, Montréal resident, Romanian of birth, and a Microbiology undergrad. I've been reading xkcd ever since a dark stormy winter night during which I caught up with 400-odd comics in a few hours. New comics make me burst with inner glee. I lo...

He did it again. Oh, how that makes me happy.
If I ever have children, these log-plotted comics will be their introduction to the world of physics :D. Too bad there's no poster of it yet.

Fortunately, in the time it took to register, nobody posted a link to Nikon's Universcale: http://www.nikon.com/about/feelnikon/universcale/index_f.htm :D This comic made me feel all giddy and fuzzy, in a Physical Chemistry course to boot! Also, the fact that a poster is already available makes me b...
