Re: "Fiction Rule of Thumb" Discussion

This might already have been mentioned, but Nadsat's largely derived from other languages so I don't think Clockwork Orange counts. My first "Exception!" was Vladmir Nabokov's 'Invitation to a Beheading.' But yes, there are lots of exceptions. I think it should be "made up words that ...

Re: "Typewriter" Discussion

The only time I've used a typewriter was at work, to fill out a form that couldn't be done on a computer or faxed or anything because we need to send it in with the original signature of someone who was absent. (Specific situation much?) Anyway, as I soon discovered, the joys inherant to type writer...

Re: ¡Hablamos español! (Spanish Practice)

Teseract, me ayudas mucho! Aunque para mi es dificil entender como hablan los argentinos -- la segunda persona informal es diferente de otros paises latinoamericanos, no? (Pues, al menos, es diferente de como hablan los chilenos)

Re: "Holy Ghost" Discussion

A while back ago, JoshuaZ quoted me, but I, for whatever reason, can't quote him. >>; My bad about which day the sabbath falls on, but keeping the sabbath is one of the 10 commandments. That being said, I'm surprised someone was able to read the Bible without finding contradictions given that, um, t...

Re: "Holy Ghost" Discussion

So, My bad, technically it was the Romans, but the Jews (or at least the Jewish Authorities) were the ones wanting him dead, the Romans didnt care so much, Pilate even tried to let him off. For those of you who don't care about the religious argument, I'm putting this under a spoiler tag. xD It was...

Re: "Regrets" Discussion

I checked this comic first thing at work and there are 4 pages of Google results for "I'm glad I saw Epic Movie." Including one that's all in Japanese.

Re: The Dark Knight

A really long review. I tend to agree with that on most aspects (and really well done, by the way, nice work). But I never tended to trust anything the joker said about himself, and look more at the holistic picture of him. He tends to contradict himself a bit I found? Can't give any solid examples...

Re: The Dark Knight

To repeat what has been said before: Oh. My. God. Amazing. I actually kindda suck at dealing with scary movies, so the entire time the Joker was on screen I tried to think of Ennis (Brokeback Mountain was the only Heath Ledger movie I had seen before) and it is a tribute to Heath Ledger as the Joker...

Re: 40% of contraceptive methods used in US now abortion?

I agree with Quixotess that a lot of the rhetoric surrounding third term abortions feeds into this misogynistic idea that women are irrational creatures who can't be trusted to make up their mind, and have to have good old doctor/Uncle Sam/whatever there to make sure they do the right thing. Will so...

Re: "Impostor" Discussion

Interestingly enough, the "schism" between humanities and sciences is a fairly recent thing This is definitely true. If you read a lot of older literature, a lot of philosophy is based (or, arguably, finds justification in) the current scientific/mathematical knowledge of the time. The on...
