in the days of the comet

A couple of years ago, an intelligent, well-educated ten-year-old boy needed my help to operate a rotary-dial telephone. We're past that point.

I'm already trying to figure out how I'll explain to children in the future what life was like before the internet.

Why not add one, to make a tidy 27?

Surely you don't think 2^5 is tidier than 3^3...

This could be why you haven't heard it.

[*SIGH*] "Everything I might find relevant to whether I should ask her out" covers more than games.

Re: 1027: "Pickup Artist"

Last night I talked to this girl who told me about her troubled past, then told me she needed a friend... She had absolutely no intention of being friends with me. This is behavior that nobody can explain with the "just treat them like people, and they'll come to you" mentality. I guess s...

Re: 1027: "Pickup Artist"

I'm confused by your usage of "sexist" there... By mutual it means equal responsibility, how in the hell can that be sexist? If you were replying to me, I said "Frankly this mutual disclosure rule sounds outlandish and silly to me, like a bit of sexist dogma mutated by sloppy thinkin...

Re: 1027: "Pickup Artist"

I think caring about the sob stories is actually very relevant. It's what leads to saying, "There are better ways - let me show you," as opposed to just "You immoral douchebags should die in a fire." This thread would be a lot shorter -- and less vitriolic -- if half the people ...

Re: 1027: "Pickup Artist"

... Are you saying I should make such a disclosure? And do you call it courtesy, good tactics, or a moral imperative? And again, does this go both ways? Can I expect her to reveal everything I might find relevant to whether I should ask her out? Yes. Moral imperative. Yes. You ought to. Any more qu...

Re: 1027: "Pickup Artist"

I get the sense that you think she'd be entitled to do that, to throw a drink in my face if she didn't like what I was thinking . Check your spider sense, it seems to be faulty. No. She's not entitled to anything, [never mind] throwing a drink in your face. It's strange that you say that, since I w...

Re: 1027: "Pickup Artist"

Here's where it gets 'bad': When you walk up to a woman with a pick-up technique in hand, knowing fully well that if she was familiar with this technique and your intent to apply it, she would probably throw her drink in your face and tell you to buzz off. I get the sense that you think she'd be en...

Re: 1027: Pickup Artist

Lots of women feel empowered to be able to say "fuck off" to men in bars, to overcome that damaging social training. I suppose I might feel "empowered" to be able to say "fuck you" to a woman, to overcome my damaging social training. In either case it's not much of an ...

Re: 1027: Pickup Artist

When reading this thread I find it very useful to keep one question in mind: "Do these techniques work?" I'm one of those shy, intellectual men for whom "just be yourself" is terrible advice (and I suspect it's not really meant to be effective anyway). I'm intelligent, kind, crea...
