Re: "Malamanteau" discussion

Oh, every wiki has a few examples of egregious word overuse.

Re: "Height" Discussion

OK, one more: Both ends of John Crichton's wormhole. If we're going down this route, must not forget the Manticore Junction. On a more relevant note, that was really weird in terms of perspective. I never thing of anything more distant than HEO or so as "up;" anything out that far is &quo...

Re: "Python" discussion

I have used Python. Professionally. STUPID BLOODY @*%$ PIECE OF CRAP OBJECT ORIENTATION "FEATURES." "Dynamic" typing? There is NO class typing. It's all a bloody "object." And don't even get me started about the drudgery of specifying things despite its retarded lack of...

Re: "1337: Part 4" Discussion

Stallman! I had to wonder when he was going to enter the picture. Edited to add: This one's for those not getting the find ~ | xargs shred && find ~nomad | xargs shred bit in the alt text. Hit the spoiler link if you need a few pointers (no, it's not going to be 32-bit hex) 'find' i...

Google "goatse" and "tubgirl" and you'll see what we mean. I wonder; will this page soon be the number one result on Google for people searching for goatse if we keep this discussion open for a while? NO. Not unless we manage to take 4chan offline. Not, mind, that that would be ...

I think you're referring not to the lack of typing, but the lack of static typing. Yes, that's what I meant- "duck typing" is the name of the practice of dynamic typing in certain languages where it has to be done explicitly. I would claim, however, that the difference between "untyp...

The worst offense is that they have no idea they're classes. You have to toss around 'self' pointers, which while it's done automatically, makes me want to puke and makes code way uglier than python really ought to be. The extension mechanism, too, is pretty hack-y, as is the fact that the class is ...

So I recently completed a 10 week project course, the object of which was to create a just-in-time compiler. When I turned it in, after essentially burning myself out, it was utterly incapable of compiling anything. I got a B+! Hooray, partial credit. (The language to be executed was a Java subset, ...

Define mail "server." If you're trying to put this thing in a moderate size company, odds are that the amount of processing needed is going to mean very, very bad things for an interpreted language and your python code will blow up where a C++ implementation would do fine. If, on the other...

Things would start to get very interesting around that tube long before you disintegrated the bottom ring. As the pebble neared the speed of light, its mass would increase greatly, with amusing gravitic consequences.

Of course he did. Bean, as we all know from the trilogy written after Mr. Card started going senile, controls the horizontal and the vertical.

@ fquizon - this year Paddy's day was Saturday. No excuse for anyone there! On topic - I HATE traffic light sequences. There is always a period where all the lights are red, all the little green men are lit, AND THERE ARE NO F***ING PEDESTRIANS FOR MILES AROUND. This does not make any sense. Someon...

Actually, 255 would only be even marginally appropriate if you were blind to only one primary. Which doesn't happen so much- two, red/green, is the most common "partial" blindness.

At any rate...

Eh, this doesn't even qualify as a pound peeve for me. I made peace with it long ago. :)

Heh... Sorry to those who think they're 192, but that's probably not your internet address. It's a commonl address for internal use on LANs; almost all Windows based LANs use it. :P
