Sorry, but I don't have any more insight - I just noticed that you had stopped at using only two of the clues. Some more questions that may help your guessing: * What do you expect as a result? e.g. 5 places/coordinates, one per line, all in the same vicinity ** and how many digits per coordinate? *...

Windows 8 (ugh!) turns your 21 inch monitor into a smartphone display, covered with giant icons of things they want you to do. If you really want to know about the memory layout of Java objects in detail, read up on "compressed oops".

If you just want to know whether your program is wasting memory, Eclipse's Memory Analyzer (or any other similar tool) can help you.

Trying to remember a computer game from the late 80s to early 90s possibly. All I can remember is that you play a male character (i think there are other characters too) and at one point in the game (i think) you go through a doorway(?) and end up on mars. If you look closely at the FF extension, you'll see that it adds an extra highlight bar beside the scroll bar. I'd recommend you do the same - add a small rectangle beside the scroll bar, and paint your markers inside it. You can look how the FF extension does it - ~600 lines of nicely commented Jav...

Second, Calendar is a mutable object... it's maybe possible that the API is returning an aliased reference - so modifying it could flow back into the system. Maybe even modify the actual system date. It's a possibility, anyway. Creating a new Calendar object like this ensures that won't happen. Obv...
