Re: 1241: "Annoying Ringtone Champion"

As a young teacher the most annoying ringtones are either high pitched noise that old people can't hear (which would be just as annoying to old teachers because their class becomes unsettled for no apparent reason) and the school bell sound. I think it would be cool to have an authentic ringtone lik...

Re: 1201: "Integration by parts"

I think that a lot of the trouble is that there is usually some fiddle factor that you need to get exactly right. In this example: ∫ x e^(2x) dx You would say that e^(2x) gets no more complicated when you integrate, and I'd agree with you because we use the same notion of "more complicated. Fo...

Re: 1201: "Integration by parts"

But there's a more fundamental insight here. Almost every textbook I've ever seen gives the formula for integration by parts as something like this: ∫f(x)g'(x)dx = f(x)g(x) - ∫f'(x)g(x)dx. Personally, I think that's a pretty tough formula for a high school student. It's not clear at all what' s goi...

Re: 1179: "ISO 8601"

"It's the 20th second of the 47th minute of the sixth hour of the 27th day of the second month of the 2013th year since the birth of Christ." Actually it's the 2012th year SINCE the (assumed) birth date of the Christ(1-01-01). Since years start on Year 1, it would be 1 year since birth by...

Re: 1050: "Forgot Algebra"

When you introduce yourself as a maths teacher you find out how much glee people have in telling you that they hated maths in school. This is why I find this comic funny because presumably Science Teachers and French teachers and History teachers don't get that reaction a third of the time. Also I l...

Re: 1016: "Valentine Dilemma"

If this scenario perfectly satisfies the conditions of the prisoners dilemma something is wrong with the relationship. I can agree (not in all cases) that viewed as a whole neither partner getting any sort of gift may be the best total net result but the other condition of the prisoners dilemma requ...

Re: 1009: "Sigh"

I'm another person who largely didn't get this because I'm Australian. I get the joke now through the forums and agree that if I'd got all the references it would probably have been hilarious. In Australia we've been subjected to the torture that is this song in small doses because it's used in the ...

Re: 0882: "Significant"

Interestingly, he is smart enough to choose his nerd items well, but way too sloppy to double-check his comic and correct the two awful mistakes people have pointed out before publishing it. Come on! He's been on this business for years and still commits such crude mistakes? We all love hearing fro...
