Question: What's the expected number of children that must be had until both a boy and a girl have been obtained? Answer: Sum[2x / 2^x, {x, 2 -> inf}] = 3 (don't feel like looking up this latex thing that's been around for ages) Extend it to 3 outcomes (think of your own analogy =.=) Answer: Sum[6x ...

90 hours is a pretty long-running game. I wouldn't sit still for it, anyway. Have you looked at a stack trace after running for a few hours? If lvup.play() doesn't terminate from within level() before the next call to it you may end up with a growing stack. Remember it's actionscript.. The clip sto...

Memory Leak

So I have this 'awesome' game in flash. But it crashes after 40-90 hours or something like that, due to a memory leak (I'm told - I always lose after about 8 hours) Since I have no idea what to do I figured I'd ask you guys. This is basically what happens. (60 fps - ie it runs 60 times a second) ct ...

My ideas: Solution one: p is the largest integer so that 2^p divides N, q the largest for 5^q. Find the first repunit which has N/(2^p * 5^q) as a factor. Multiply the repunit by 10^(the larger of p and q). -> Always works because all k with GCD(10,k) = 0 will divide a repunit Solution two: Find non...

9 coins 4 weighings?

Code: Select all

A B C D E F G H I

Should always work... Simple to check because you're weighing either 3 or 6 at a time so it's only doubling and halving :P

You cannot change the third weighing depending on the first and second weighings.
So you'd have to do BD for the third, and then you wouldn't be able to tell A and B apart (eg. weighing 5, 12, 12)

Although ignoring that rule, you still need to be able to find the fake mass in all circumstances.

Weighing coins! (electronic scale)

Okay. You have 5 coins. You have one scale. One of the coins is a fake and of a different mass. You must use 3 weighings only and you must be able to always find out which coin is fake. You cannot change the third weighing depending on the first and second weighings. Oh... and the scale is electroni...
