For x86: Memory permissions (such as the ability to not modify kernel memory) are implemented on top of the memory management hardware (MMU) There are a few permission bits: The kernel runs at ring0, which is supervisor mode, and the user programs run at ring3, which is user mode. Wow, really? CMU for CS or engineering is absolutely top-tier. In CS Carnegie Mellon is comparable to MIT and in particular aspects it is a better school--namely programming language theory and algorithms/data structures research. Likewise, engineering. To those in the field, there's no difference. ...

Re: Why do Unix Pipes only execute 2 commands in parallel?

That isn't true. The pipe system call creates an IPC channel. (see man 2 pipe)

Most shells implement a wrapper for this system call via the | token. But the *nix kernel is providing the pipe inter-process channel, not the shell.

No, you write a fully preemptive multitasking kernel with multiple virtual address spaces, a selection of useful system calls, and so on. Well, if it's Calc I and Calc II then they're generally short one semester courses each anyway. I don't know really, I did single variable calc in high school.
