Re: 2101: Technical Analysis

Back when I was learning the biz, and learning that i didn't like the biz, I made certain realizations for my own use: 1. Discount rate is relative - real discount rate is associated with your ability to hedge, from the perspective of a derivatives trader. 2. Honesty in the markets is also relative ...

Re: 2094: "Short Selling"

My favorite description of short selling is inverted Wimpy - "I will gladly pay you today for a hamburger on Thursday". You are not mentioning the options uses of short selling - you can make a synthetic put by shorting the stock and buying the call - and that fact allows you to determine ...

Re: 2034: "Equations"

most important equation? My vote is for:

U+2205 U+2260 U+2205

If you want that in a prose form... "everything can be divided into two categories - those things that can be divided into two categories, and those that can't".

watch for inappropriate binaries.

I am not sure that we are supposed to take this one seriously, at least not literally. e to the (pi - infinity)? when pi is an index between something finite and infinity? this is probably a joke about using symbols with previous meaning inappropriately HEAT -> H2EAT is probably a joke.... the equat...

Someone should fix the "favorite number between one and one hundred" questions...

It didn't take 3.14159..... and it didn't take e.

Clear fails.

It is possible that Randal was alluding to the fact that a critter with too many parasites dies. A society with too many elements striving for advantage, without putting something into the system, also dies. Kinda makes you look at some of the extreme politics out there... I'm look at you, Rs. There...

I'm not sure about this - My first impression was "the most flagrant example of needing to get a life that I've seen in forever"... sorry Randall. Then I read the comments, and thought that perhaps getting such nerd hormones flowing had some virtue in itself. But then again maybe not. Gett...

Humm... author may have been sorta thinking of Caltech... and for sex in Hyperspace, I'm sure it has been done. Certainly the Sync. lab is possible... accelerator tunnels suggest Stanford, but the linac has been busy for a long time... and Berkeley has lots of accelerators up the hill... Good times....

My additions to the "children" section of this thread... pre-whatever would probably have been preferable... pre-sophont, pre-literate, pre-appreciated... And I have fairly good recall of when I was pre-communicative... in the late phase I thought adults were stupid since I could understan...

I didn't read the many pages of comments... 'cept the first two and the last... But lots of people seem to miss if you click on the map you get zoomed. And I think the map is basically a Risk map... which may also be the joke. Foreshadowed by the Kamchatka comment. Although the Peters verses Robinso...

Re: Falling Asleep discussion (784)

It's really interesting that so many people see this as a dark comic. I thought it was sweet. Of course, I just got back from 4 days of travel, 3 of which I couldn't get to sleep (had 2-4 hours each night) 'cause of insomnia. First night back I slept well. Weird so many people think you have to be o...
