Re: 1732: "Earth Temperature Timeline"

Surely Randall didn't cherry pick data on purpose, did he?

Re: 1150: Instagram

The proper justification of property is that it allows the individual to be the beneficiary of his own actions. If you create a value, you get to exploit it for your own personal gain. This equally applies to intellectual property. If I create a book or a song, I have the right to demand compensati...

Re: 1150: Instagram

I still didn't get the comic until I did some googling to find what they were doing. An article I came across claims that their ability to do this was always in their terms of use, and that the change they made just made it a bit more explicit. But anyway, It is a horrible completely invalid analogy...

Re: "Revolutionary" Discussion

The only reason that we have a goal to live is that the people who were genetically pre-disposed to not live didn't pass on their genes. That's not to say that suicidal tendencies are purely genetic (obviously they're not), but the "will to live" is something that is biologically inherent...

Re: "Revolutionary" Discussion

Whatever the universe is doing is very strange indeed, and it certainly appears very much to be non-deterministic. This is a problem that goes far beyond just an incomplete knowledge of it on our part. I doubt very much you will find any determinists that believe in quantum mechanics (let alone Man...

Re: "Revolutionary" Discussion

Basically, the Libertarians begrudgingly took a lot of ideas from Rand. Her ideas fed and gave much strength to their movement, but they still hated her, and she hated them. But they hate each other as well. If the only defining characteristic is really that they are in favor of absolute personal fr...

Philosophy: The art of asking questions that can't be answered, claiming that it is somehow worthwhile and relevant to other people, then questioning what the nature of 'other' is. Alternatively, a bunch of smug people with goatees that don't have the brainpower for logical discussions beyond the d...

Re: "Revolutionary" Discussion

I must apologize. I may have gotten a little zealous in my post. You guys responded to it calmly, and I respect you for that. First, I'll say that I don't know much about physics. At all. I'd be a hypocrite to come into this thread and try to say that I can prove Many Worlds Interpretation to be fal...

Re: "Revolutionary" Discussion

Late argument joiner myself. Usually I just look at the comic and go on my merry way without venturing to the forum. But here I am now. I probably should have taken the quip against philosophers as just poking fun. But considering this was shown to me by my roommate, who regularly uses science to (u...

Re: "Sheeple" Discussion

I hate long, drawn out, point-by-point rebuttals, so I'll just say this. You talk a lot about militant groups controlling people with guns. But who do you think makes the guns? Productive people. The only power others have to keep us down is power we give them. Stop producing what they need to keep ...

Re: "Sheeple" Discussion

Rights require a certain degree of altruism; what else keeps the strong from preying on the weak? If the strong prey on the weak, then they aren't considering the other person's rights. Rights are universal. If you want your own rights, you have to recognize rights as universal to everyone. Afteral...

If you believe in something, you should make a stand on it Indeed you should, and I'm glad you are making a stand for what you believe in. I apologize if I came across as a butt in this topic. Well, I guess that discredits me. I'm an aspiring programmer, not a mathematician. The kind of mathematics required to test my theory are outside the scope of my knowledge. So while I rather like my theories, and feel that they aren't just something I pulled outta my ass, theories are all they will ...

I wasn't disagreeing with anything when I made that comment. Just saying that relative lack of experience on a certain subject shouldn't stop one from participating in that subject. Fresh, new minds may see things or think of things in ways that the seasoned mind may miss, making up for lack of expe...

It's okay. I have absolutely no physics experience at all. Not even a physics class in high school.

Pure logic and reasoning powers my arguments. Who's to say you can't base yours off of the same thing?

The african americans also stood up for their own rights. Something meat does not do. :P You are right. Vegetarians are becoming a large enough minority to be catered to. I don't think meat production would slow down though. I decided to do a quick lazy-search to find out if meat production is slowi...

I was arguing that you could not affect it unless you had a significant number of vegetarians, and that you're never going to be able to convert enough meat eaters into vegetarians to affect it.

Yes, the universe expanding can be likened to a balloon expanding. Everything not only expanding, but expanding away from each other as well. And in more dimensions as you say. What I said about some things expanding faster can also be explained as everything simply expanding away from each other as...

I don't pretend to know a lot about the universe. But it is logical to argue that if the universe is indeed expanding, then it must have all expanded from somewhere. Perhaps not everything in the universe has the same momentum. Some things are expanding faster than others. The things that are expand...

I don't believe that you should not vote. Nor do I believe your vote does not matter if you don't win. If you don't, you can still say that you cast your vote for what you believe in. "I voted for the other guy." "I voted against meat." The only problem being that while you are m...

If you toss a ball up into the air, you stop acting on it (similarly to how the Big Bang stopped acting on matter). While the ball continues to go up, it decelerates, and comes back down. What we're seeing is the ball fly further and further away. The ball would fly further and further if it were f...

On a more jestful note, what makes eating plants morally better than eating meat anyway? You're still killing and eating a life-form. Does the fact that a plant can't scream suddenly make it okay? Does the fact that your food doesn't put up a fight make you sleep better at night? Okay, even as a me...

This is a rather interesting topic. The expansion of the universe is because of the Big Bang, obviously. The original force of that giant explosion is still propelling us outward to this day. But when the universe gets too big, the gravity will cause it to pull back in on itself, for the Big Collaps...

Indeed. If they can't convert a few meat eaters on a message board, how on earth will they be able to start a movement strong enough to even touch meat production? And if you can't affect meat production enough to slow it down, my argument about wasting the meat remains valid.

Now, for boycotts and lack of demand to be effective, it has to be a significant portion of the customer base. Exactly! A few scattered vegetarians here and there aren't going to impact the meat industry. A significant customer base would require a huge movement in which a very large number of peop...

I eat meat because it's tasty! Let's say that one day, I suddenly decide that it's unethical to eat meat, and stop eating it. What happens to the meat that I don't purchase? It sits on a store shelf, goes bad, and is thrown out. Totally wasted. It would have been much better to just eat it anyway. N...
